Part 1: What is WannaCry? Don’t pay!

The WannaCry hackers, targeting at a vulnerability in Windows, give a worm feature to WannaCry, ordering it to spread between Windows computer at fast speed. So far more than 200,000 Windows PC and 150 countries have been infected. The WannaCry is also known as WannaCrypt, WannaCrypt 2.0, Wanna Decryptor.

In mid-March, 2017, a tool (EternalBlue) detected this vulnerability, and Microsoft provided a patch in the update. However, as to people who did not apply the update in time, they were still open to attack. No urgent update notification was received, causing lots of people are affected in this attack.

Once affected, users will be demanded or request to pay almost $300 to $600 in bitcoin. Otherwise, users will be kept locking out of their computers and files. The malware also leaves the threatening message "Ooops, your files have been encrypted!" that files will be gone for good, forever.

Don’t pay! Never ever trust a hacker and criminal who threaten people for money. Users who pay the demand will get no response. The hacker should not know which computer is paid and let alone unlock it. It not only does not help restore any files, but also provide money for the criminal to prepare another potential attack.

Part 2: Who is it targeting? Download patch now!

Most infected computers are running the older Windows OS, like Windows 8, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003.

According to the news and report, a more recent Windows version is less vulnerable to WannaCry: such as Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016

(Tips: As far from now, MacOS, ChromeOS or Linux is not infected. If you are running these OSes, no need to be panic.)

If using a more recent version, users should also keep staying up up-to-date on OS update request in order to prevent from being infected. If the Windows update is disabled, please turn it on by yourself. Because the WannaCry keeps changing, and no one can exactly predict when and in what way a possible attack would show up again.
