Essential Mac Tips: Protect Files with Encrypted DMG
Samuel

After learning how to hide the file on the Mac, now there is another trick on how to encrypt files in Mac OS X and set the DMG password. Read it! And you may know how to make your files more private.

It's more convenient than Windows to manage files on Mac, because the system structure is different from the file, so the files can be casually put on the Mac. Sometimes, we can search easily just by a powerful Spotlight. However, if we encountered some sensitive information, what should we do to couple with a layer of protection.

As we know, Apple is a company who focused on user privacy, so when we use the Mac, it is difficult to hide some of the files, or to encrypt these files – DMG (Apple Disk Image). However, for many users, some confidential and important documents is necessary to “get hidden”, so they often explore a lot of ways to complete this step.

Therefore, I sorted out a lot of knowledge on how to encrypt confidential files on the Mac, let us have a look!

Part1. Protect files with DMG encryption

Part2. Take the folder as the new disk image

Part1. Protect files with DMG encryption

Step1. Open the "Disk Tools" (Launchpad / utility), according to the “option-command-N” or click "New Image", enter the image name (dmg file name), select the location, set the size (such as your file, then you can set a 10G, 20G), select the format, the most important thing is to select "encryption", click "Create".

Note: There are two names, one is "stored as", another is the "disk image", the former is the name of the dmg file, which is displayed when dmg mount the name.

Step2. Now it will pop up the password settings window, here be sure to uncheck the "Remember my password in the keychain" (the default is selected), or the password is not the same, any login to the account System people can directly double-click to open the DMG file, without the need to enter a password. So, encryption would not make sense.

Step3. After creation, you can double-click the dmg password to mount the image, to protect the file directly onto the disk image. To view the file directly after double-mount dmg, and then exit the image file.

Notes: Here is that the size of the disk image should be set properly, otherwise there may be insufficient image space. In fact, the use of FileVault encryption is the principle.

Besides, it is understood that encrypted DMG is an encrypted folder, to delete the image file only need to directly delete the DMG file in the Finder.

Part2. Take the folder as the new disk image

Step: Open the Disk Utility and press “shift-command-N” or click the “Disk Utility” File → New → Folder Image for Disk, then select the folder you want to create a disk image Click Image.

So that you can directly create a folder dmg image, the advantage is that you do not have to allocate their own size, the system will automatically allocate the same size as the folder image.

In short, if you want your files to be completely private, the first thing you need to do is hiding the files on your Mac, and then follow the above steps to encrypt DMG for the files.
